GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 12 • 33 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com P urdue responded well to its first loss of a season, in double overtime to Green Bay on Nov. 19, by taking control vs. To- ledo Sunday afternoon about midway through the first half. Then, an 18-3 run turned a one-point game into 14 at the half, and the Boil- ermakers (2-1) led by as many as 22 in the second. Following are takeaways from the game: S Opponents are going to con- tinue to sink in their defense until Purdue can consistently prove that it can make them pay from the perimeter. Against the Rockets, Whitney Bays and Liza Clemens combined for only 14 points, because they drew the attention of the defense. Bays, at times, looked frustrated by the doubles — and the physicality — but kept battling to find rare opportuni- ties to score. Purdue, though, capitalized by hit- ting five of its 10 three-pointers, includ- ing a couple in a row by starter Hayden Hamby in decisive first-half run. But the makes have to come consistently, and only time will show whether or not that can happen, for opponents to back off Purdue's interior duo. S Given Purdue's length, both inside and on the perim- eter, rebounding should be an advantage. But after it gave up too many second-chances late against Green Bay, Purdue was beaten on the glass by Mid-American Con- ference opponent Toledo. That's not a good sign. The Rockets had 19 offensive boards, at times seeming to push the Boilermakers too far under the basket. Fatigue might have been partly at fault, since Purdue had practiced hard following the surprise loss to GB, but something needs done, as well. Purdue's 3 spot needs to board better: Bridget Perry, a 6-foot-2 forward, is averaging only three per game, and Andreona Keys is about the same off the bench. S Hamby started in place of Ashley Morrissette for Toledo, after Morrissette had led Purdue in scoring through the first two games. Perhaps a wake-up call? Sharon Versyp said after the game that she would start those who were working hard in practice, in good times and bad. Morrissette is an excellent scorer, but might lose focus on the nu - ances — turnovers, defense, rebound- ing — at times. But she'll likely be back in as a starter soon. j W O M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L G O L D B O X L I N K S T O G A M E S T O R Y Tom Campbell Hayden Hamby was a surprise starter against Toledo, and scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
