As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memo-
rable covers while reflecting what was going on at the time.
It is hard to find a time Purdue football fans have been more
ecstatic after a 7-6 season than 2002 when the Boilermakers dis-
posed of Washington 34-24 in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 31. It was revenge of sorts for
the Boilermakers as they were defeated by the same team, the same coach (Rick
Neuheisel) and same score just two years earlier in Pasadena.
The victory was extra sweet as the Boilermakers pulled off one of the great
comebacks in their history, rallying from an early 17-point deficit to get the victory.
Coach Joe Tiller, seen on the cover celebrating as the final gun went off in El
Paso, Texas, said years later that the victory spurred an offseason with the highest
expectations from the fan base he had experienced at Purdue to date. The Boilermakers delivered pretty well in 2003,
finishing with a 9-4 record, a New Year's Day bowl appearance and coming within an eyelash of winning the Big Ten.
