GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 15 • 21 he suffered in his final high school game. Sindelar underwent surgery in Indianapolis in mid-December. FOUR SIGNED Purdue has signed scholarship papers from four mid-year recruits: Sindelar, Jones, snapper Ben Makowski and junior college wide receiver Anthony Mahoungou, who'll have three years of eligibility. All four players will enroll for the Jan. 12 beginning of the spring semester and be able to join team activities immediately. It is possible as well that Purdue could add an additional mid-year recruit after los- ing one at the last second last month. Junior college tight end Cole Hiku- tini committed to the Boilermakers, then sucker-punched them by flipping to Louis- ville, a school that had barely recruited him, right on top of the mid-year signing date. The Boilermaker staff was intent on signing a junior college tight end to enroll in January and is now likely to be left with- out one. PURDUE ADDS CORNER Maryland cornerback David Rose broke a commitment to Toledo and com- mitted to Purdue shortly after the Boiler- maker coaching staff offered in December. The 6-foot, 175-pound corner from Po- tomac High School in Maryland fills a need for Purdue at corner, one exacerbated by class attrition. Rose's commitment came shortly after Texas' Isaac Warren backed out of a long- standing commitment to the Boilermakers. He has not yet committed elsewhere but has reported interest from Arizona State. Warren flipped to Purdue in the sum- mer after originally committing to Sam Houston State. BASKETBALL VISITS Five-star 2015 big man Caleb Swani- gan unofficially visited Purdue for the Min- nesota game on New Year's Eve, his first recruiting-focused trip among the several times he's been on campus. Purdue followed up the visit from the elite big man by sending Coach Matt Paint- er to watch him play the next two nights. Swanigan is being nationally recruited, with the likes of Kentucky, Duke and Michi- gan State among the others who've of- fered and sent their head coaches to watch him this season, though the Boilermakers are considered a legitimate contender for the Fort Wayne Homestead star. Purdue also hosted 2016 guard target Jarron Cumberland for an unofficial visit for the Minnesota game, while two of its top in-state 2017 targets, Paul Scruggs and Kris Wilkes, visited for Minnesota and Michigan, respectively. Both are going to be national recruits. FOOTBALL RECRUITING NOTEBOOK R Junior college defensive line com- mitment Shayne Henley originally expect- ed to be able to enroll mid-year at Purdue, but wasn't able to get his academics to that point. He remains committed, though, and will enroll in the summer instead. R Safety commitment Andy Chelf tore his ACL in his final high school game and underwent surgery on Christmas Eve. R Boilermaker four-star running back target Ke'Shawn Vaughn expects to make an official visit to Notre Dame in mid-January in advance of making his long-awaited decision. The Boilermakers have long been among his front-runners, with other prime contenders such as Ohio State and Louisville adding other running backs to their classes and thus perhaps falling out of the picture for Tennessee's Mr. Football. Others who have offered include Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Wis- consin, but none of those schools were included when Vaughn named a list of three in December that was made up of Ohio State (prior to another commit- ment), Purdue and Louisville. Alabama and Florida have been among some who have maintained inter- est in Vaughn but not yet offered. R Blue-chip athlete Brian Cole, who officially visited Purdue during the season, kept to his long-standing commitment to Michigan after taking visits to Nebraska and Wisconsin, as well as West Lafayette. He'll enroll in Ann Arbor in coming weeks. j Tom Campbell Blue-chip big man Caleb Swanigan unofficially visited for Purdue's win over Minnesota. When I say "good," you say "neighbor."
