GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 18 • 11 and a steal — that led to a one-handed dunk — in a season-high 25 minutes. "Without Basil playing as well as he did, I don't believe we would have won the game," Davis said. Though the points and energy were nice, it was Smotherman's rebounding that especially crucial in the game's final stretch. After Iowa missed a jumper with about 20 seconds left, it was Smotherman who soared to grab the defensive rebound. Then, again, after a missed three-pointer in the final 10 seconds, Smotherman lifted above the crowd to grab an- other one. Davis called them "grown-man rebounds." "It's pretty amazing and remarkable from when I came in just wanting to survive from a great little town in Illinois, Tolono, and now have that opportunity to go into the Hall of Fame. It's pretty special." Being able to "survive" seemed even difficult in his first days at Purdue in 1995 as a freshman. Cardinal said he vividly recalls the first open gym games when he struggled so badly that he left Mackey teary and "scratching my head, won - Tom Campbell After being buried on the bench for much of Big Ten play, sophomore Basil Smotherman broke out in a big way against the Hawkeyes with a career-high 13 points and six rebounds.
