Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publish-
ing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at
memorable covers while reflecting what was
going on at the time.
In the last week of January 2008, there was a
new set of stars emerging in Big Ten basketball. And the face of the
Baby Boilers was freshman forward Robbie Hummel. In Purdue's dra-
matic win over Wisconsin, Hummel made the last-second block of
Michael Flowers' layup that preserved the 60-56 win over the 11
th
-
ranked Badgers. After the block, Hummel was fouled, and sank both
free throws to account for the four-point spread.
It ignited a celebration on Keady Court with students and fans
spilling onto the surface in a postgame celebration not seen in the
facility in 15 years.
Though Hummel had 10 points and seven boards, it was fellow
freshman E'Twaun Moore's 16 points that kept the Badgers at bay, especially in the second half.
The victory capped off a great month of Saturday basketball games in Mackey Arena with the Boil-
ermakers winning four straight and serving notice that they would be a factor in the league race.
In the end, Wisconsin won the league crown by one game over Purdue, but the Badgers' lone league
defeat came at the hands of the upstart Boilermakers.
