and of course, the clowns. This year’s theme was specifically designed to be interpreted many ways thus giving parade entrants the ability to be creative in the design of their float. Call 523-1010 or visit idahofallschamber. com for information on parade entries and other details. The Road Apple Roulette It might strike you as a bit wonky at first blush, but you could win big at this year’s parade in Idaho Falls by simply forecasting where a passing horse will drop a doody. That’s right, all you have to do is buy your designated drop spot ahead of time and cross your fingers. Proceeds for this unique contest will go toward civic projects through the East Side Rotary Club. Visit www.ifchamber.com for more details. Gate City Celebration Pocatello’s Annual 4th of July Parade The Pocatello Elks Lodge has sponsored the parade for more than 30 years. Along with a broad range of festivities throughout the day, the parade itself will include prizes for best float, most creative float design and best business. The Elks Lodge will be having an open house and barbecue at the lodge after the parade. The public is certainly welcome, so bring your friends and family for a great time in the Gate City. While the Independence Day celebra- tion ranks high on the organization’s list of accomplishments, the Elks also hosts/ sponsors a number of other key community events and programs throughout the calen- dar year, including boy and girl scout activi- ties, the Idaho State Linux Users Group (computer geeks), Hoop Shoot, Soccer Shoot, Easter Egg Hunt and Christmas Baskets for needy families in Pocatello. The civic group is also involved in student scholarships and a Veterans Christmas & Care Kit. Whoopee Days Celebrate Independence Day on July 3 in Rexburg with the many events offered. Start the day with the Liberty 5K Run at Nature Park. The course runs through trails, bike paths and the golf course. Cool off with parades, a party in the park and fireworks (Admission: $15). At 9:30 a.m., the Flag Raising will be held at the Flag Pole on Main Street. Immediately after at 10 a.m., the parade will begin at Smith Park. It will then go through Main Street, and finally end at Porter Park. The “Day in the Park” will then go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Porter Park. Cap the day off with a patriotic fire- works display following the Rodeo at the fairgrounds beginning at 10 p.m. For more information, call 356-5700. A Day for Taters Idaho Spud Day draws in the crowds At the conclusion of each summer, the town of Shelley puts on one heckuva party. The potato celebration has been an annual event for the past seven decades and it kicks off the spud harvest every season. The Miss Russet pageant, the Spud Run and free baked potatoes are just a sample of what this event has to offer. There are also children’s spud games, but they kind of resembled a six-year- olds soccer game. You have a bunch of kids running around all confused as to why they’re picking up spuds in a buck- et. But kids are kids and they don’t get overly competitive in sports or in spud games like adults do. They just want to run around and have fun and eat their orange slices after. Besides all the vendors, there is one event that will keep the regulars coming back each year and that’s the infamous Spud Tug. It’s a simple concoction: Acquire 1,400 pounds of potato flakes and combine them with about 1,000 gal- lons of water. Mix it all up in a cement truck, and you have the recipe of a memorable afternoon. The 82nd annual event is scheduled this year for Sept. 18. IDAHOFALLSMAGAZINE.COM | 25
