Volunteers plant donated flowers into the planter boxes that line the sidewalks of Historic Downtown Idaho Falls and local businesses sponsor dozens of hanging baskets. This year the annual “Springing Downtown Forward Planting Event” will take place on June 3rd. To fill the many downtown planter boxes Town & Country Gardens will donate sev- eral flats of flowers and the Home Depot has given the downtown a generous grant of $1500 for additional flowers and sup- plies. The Home Depot will also provide over a dozen volunteer workers. A friendly Master Gardener from the IF Garden Club or Garden Talk Garden Club will be ready to guide the volunteers on where to plant which types of flowers. The result will be a stunning display of thriving plants. What about the beautiful hanging bas- kets? The baskets will also be located throughout the historic downtown area. Each basket is sponsored by a local business or individual who cares about downtown. Despite the rough economy, many local businesses have still stepped up to spon- sor the hanging baskets, bringing a pop of color to eye level. IFDDC Office Assistant, Mala Lyon, works hard behind the scenes contacting local businesses and individuals to sponsor the baskets. “Every single one of the 76 baskets has a sponsor for this season. I knew our downtown businesses were Support Your ‘Downtowners’ Local downtown businesses offer a unique set of products and services, all within walking distance of one another. generous, but given the economy, I was surprised at how enthusiastic they were to sponsor the hanging baskets,” says Lyon. After volunteers plant the flowers and the baskets are hung, the work does not stop. The City of Idaho Falls continues general maintenance and waters the plants to make sure they survive during our hot summer months. With help from the City, the down- town flowers can be enjoyed throughout the entire summer. “This great event would not be possible without the generosity of our local busi- nesses and individual volunteers,” says the IF Downtown Development Corp. Executive Director, John Hart. “The result is spectacu- lar. It makes coming downtown to work and shop during the summer a wonderful experience.” If you haven’t visited downtown Idaho Falls in the spring and summer months, make sure to come and see the beautiful hanging baskets and flower planters that line the downtown streets and accent our unique shops and businesses. If you would like to join other volunteers, the IFDDC, and the Home Depot volunteers, meet us Thursday, June 3rd at 8:30 a.m. at Civitan Plaza (corner of Park and ‘B’). We will also be accepting personal flower dona- tions from individuals throughout the com- munity-just bring your perennial or annual Beauty Baskets Set for June 3, interested volunteers can get their hands dirty in a full day’s worth of beau- tification efforts. With no small measure of prescience, many of these structures even have the date of their completion engraved upon their facades, like a timeless testament to their authenticity.
