Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing
Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memo-
rable covers while reflecting what was going on
at the time.
This cover from our March 22, 2008 issue was as
unique a display as we have had in our history. Cover designer Dan
Annarino focused on the eyes of both the men's and women's bas-
ketball players and Coaches Sharon Versyp and Matt Painter when
trying to articulate what was at stake in the 2008 Big Dance.
The men earned a No. 6 seed but were the second-to-last-team
announced during the Selection Show. A mere inconvenience how-
ever, as there was no doubt Purdue was in the Tournament.
Versyp's team earned a No. 9 seed and a date against No. 8 seed
Utah in Mackey Arena. Despite a 19-13 record, the Boilermakers
claimed a spot in the field with another magical run to a Big Ten Tournament title a week
earlier. The issue focused on the first- and second-round opponents for both teams.
The issue also contained a Q&A with president France Cordova and also featured
a picture of then-Governor Mitch Daniels in our gallery from the men's Big Ten Tourna-
ment. Daniels didn't see the No. 2 seed Boilermakers triumph as they were upset by No.
10 seed Illinois in the quarterfinals.
A week later, the men were ousted by third-seeded Xavier in Washington D.C. and
the women by top seed Tennessee in legendary coach Pat Summitt's third and final trip
to Mackey Arena.
