SXSW 2014 Music & Media Conference | 35 SXSW OVERVIEW A CONVERSATION WITH PEELANDER YELLOW SXSW MUSIC BIG BAG ARTIST Tell me about the inspiration behind your design for the 2014 Music Big Bag. It is inside my brain and it is about all of the things happening at SXSW. Ohhh Yeahhh! SXSW is soooo much fun and can see another world… I have tons of SXSW bags, but not with my design so this is a super big time for me! I'm so happy to get to design for a SXSW bag! You often use linocutting to make your art. What method did you use for this piece? I made it on the computer but it the idea is the same as linocutting. Actually, I love Rhinos - so I call it 'Rhinocutting'! There is a lot of your art in Austin. How did you get Involved with East Side King? I went to East Side King to eat a lot and they asked me to paint their trailers and murals. My first project was the East Side King Trailer at Liberty on E 6th St. It opened the door to my happy art life in Austin! Speaking of food, you said that you were going to make a song for your vegetarian fans (an alternative to the Peelander-Z song 'S.T.E.A.K.') Is that still your plan? Yeah! I want to make a veggie song! I have decided to call it 'Veggie Veggie Vegetable'. Oooh yeaahh! Do you design the art for Peelander-Z such as album covers and your amazing outfits? It's my skin, I was born like this! I designed them and my friend made them for us! For the albums, I did the art for 'Super DX Hitz' and also a lot of merchandise - posters, tees… What has been the biggest influence on your art and music? All shapes from mother nature! For artists, Tim Kerr from Austin. I saw his paint- ings and it opened my third eye - it is my art eye! As both a musician and a visual artist, which process do you prefer? They are very different for me. I need both of them and love them both in their own way. They help each other - like the sky and the ocean! Do you have plans for more art shows in the future? I'm thinking about a big show in Austin - it would make me and all people in Austin happy! Peelander-Z are now SXSW veterans. When did you first come? I started play SXSW 2003, then we came to play every year - this year is the 11th Anniversary! My first SXSW experience was 2002. I just came Yellow, front man of Japanese (by way of New York) 'Action-Comic-Punk' band Peelander-Z, has formed a strong bond with Austin over the past decade. He is responsible for the vibrant, psychedelic paintings that cover Paul Qui's legendary East Side King food trailers, held his first full art exhibition here in 2012 and is showcasing at SXSW Music for the 11th year in a row. Here, he gives us a peek inside his otherworldly mind to learn about his art, music and design for the 2014 Music Big Bag. A FEW PREVIOUS SXSW BIG BAG ARTISTS: 2004 Shepard Fairey | 2006 Wayne Coyne | 2009 Jamie Hewlett | 2010 Neko Case | 2012 Sam Beam CHECK OUT MORE OF PEELANDER YELLOW'S ARTWORK AT YELLOWNOPPP.TUMBLR.COM/ with my friend's band - without Peelander-Z. I was so sad, because I didn't have a show. After that, I tried my best to come SXSW every year - SXSW always makes me work hard to do music! Art, too. See, SXSW always makes me work sooooo hard! Finally, what's next for you and Peelander-Z? I want to come to SXSW with a movie! And… I want to make a big fest with a circus, wrestling, food, cosplay, art and a space star ship to go to Planet Peelander! Are you ready to ride it?!
