At least Darrell Hazell thinks so. Even though the Boilermak- ers have lost four games to this point they've been more com- petitive for the most part. Since the shocking 21-point loss to Central Michigan in Week 2, Purdue has lost three games by an average of 14.7 points. But in all three of those games, the Boilermakers were within one score by at least halftime and as late as the final minutes last week against No. 8 Michigan State. At this point last season, Purdue had lost six games by an average of 26 points, and it's only victory was by six. So when Purdue had a chance to tie the game against the Spartans last week late in the fourth quarter but couldn't pull it out, Hazell and players entered the postgame press conference upset. They saw it as an opportu - nity missed. There was no joy for competing. "That's the next step we have to take — we have to be able to finish football games. Getting close is not the answer," Hazell said this week.
