The Boilermakers don't want a repeat of 2015, when Paul Griggs' early struggles — he made only three of his first eight — led Purdue to simply give up on the notion of kicking in the sec- ond half of the season. And the walk-ons, Tyler Duncan, Myl- es Homan and Brian Bravo, did nothing to quell those fears. Maybe Dellinger can. At Charlotte Country Day School, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder was 7-of-13 as a senior, but those numbers don't really paint an entirely clear picture; of the six misses, four came from at least 47 yards (and a long attempt of 56) and a fifth was blocked. Dellinger had better consistency from more reasonable ranges, and that's what Purdue is seeking. "If he can mimic what I saw in per- son at his high school (on my visit) that day, he'll be fine," Coach Darrell Hazell said of a recruiting trip to see Dellinger. "He's got a big leg. He was very accu- rate, very consistent. Extremely consis- tent to do what he did for 40 minutes in the rain was incredible." Dellinger says he's been working to improve his consistency, wanting to be about 90 percent from mid-range (about 40 yards) and in. He works with Dan Orner, the same renowned kicking coach who trained fellow Charlotte na- tive Griggs, and his high school special teams coach. "That's really what I've focused on in my training this offseason, being as close to perfect as I can be from 35 to 40 (yards in)," Dellinger said. "Because when I watch most college games, I don't see very many that go above 40, honestly. When they do, it's usually to end the half or to end the game or in a close situation."
