Gold and Black: Saying what you just said about confidence, with how tough the schedule is and if you get off to a slower start than you would like, are you trying to instill things in them now to handle that kind of adversity? Hazell: "Oh yeah. I think you talk about adversity and how you overcome it. When you do stumble, you have to keep going back and talk about preparation and that allows you to see beyond the pain a lot of times, and you have to talk about the process to get to where you need to be. If you keep talking about the preparation and the process, that allows people to be in there hurting for awhile because it hurts to lose. It's the worst. For me, at least. There's been some plane rides and some bus rides that you ache. Your heart just absolutely aches. But then that next day, you think, 'OK, what do we have to do? What's the preparation that we need to do to get better?' That's what gets you through the tough times." Gold and Black: How do you feel about the offense? Hazell: "I think what we do offensively under the new system, once we learn it well enough, I think it will create some serious mismatches to our advantage." Gold and Black: Defensively, you have more FIrst Show Aug. 30! starting experience. Do you feel more comfortable about where your defense is at? Hazell: "Yeah, but more so because of our defensive line. I think we're going to be able to play a lot of guys up front. If those guys can allow themselves not to be one-on-one blocked, we'll create some issues for teams. That's what's so promising about the defense. I think we're going to be solid in the back end. I think we'll be solid up front, and we've got to figure out the four or five best linebackers to play." Gold and Black: Will you set goals for this season in terms of wins and statistics, things of that nature? Hazell: "We'll set our team goals: Big Ten on our side of the division, Big Ten championship, obviously the Rose Bowl. We'll say those things to our team, quietly and confidently. Then we'll have each of our goals on each side of the line of scrimmage, our offense, defense and special teams goals each week so we can physically see them each week. But a lot of those things are talked about behind closed doors and we don't need to overtly go out and pound our chest about it. It's about you having to have goals and here's how you get to those goals. We'll talk about that." j Coming this fall to a computer or mobile device near you!
