TDs, averaged almost 26 per in limited attempts last year. "I don't think there there's a team like me and Hunt back there," Mostert said. "We take the time to know our assignment with the kick return and, as you can tell, we do our job pretty well." Purdue's less confident on punt returns, where its had a dearth of productivity the last decade. The Boilermakers averaged only 3.2 yards per punt return last season, the second-worst in the Big Ten. Take away Ricardo Allen's one that went for a team-high 25 yards, and the Boilermakers averaged less than two yards per chance. "We're going to try to improve on that," Parker said. "We don't want (just) two yards, but the biggest key is ball possession. We stressed that to the guys in the spring. But there's no doubt, we want to get guys pressing the ball vertical and getting a return game. "And we feel like we have two or three guys that we're going to try out, and maybe more." The primary options in the spring were Allen, who has the athleticism but hasn't shown a consistent enough ability to catch, and Frankie Williams. But Mostert could be an option, too, or fellow receiver Danny Anthrop, who was injured during the spring but should get a chance in practice this fall. "You've got to have a special guy back there, no doubt," Parker said. "But we've got to do a good job of holding up, going to block punts and being sound in our block to be able to free up that guy to allow him to get vertical." It's another avenue in which Hazell would like to see the Boilermakers have an edge. "Our special teams this year will determine at least three games, if not more," Hazell said. "So we better be good. Good means sound first and then you've got to make a few plays." j on the iPad Access Included for all pri subscribe nt rs! The iPad app is available at the App store.
