By the numbers Tom Campbell Hazell is taking pages from Jim Tressel's book — literally. Hazell has adapted Tressel's "Winners Manual" and brought it to Purdue. Hazell will handle out his 533-page binder, "A Player's Manual," to players when they report for training camp in August. dered after getting his first copy of Jim Tressel's version of the book in 2004 as a player at Ohio State. "When you first get it, you don't know what to do with it." That was the "Winners Manual," and it was an idea Tressel had while he was at Youngstown State in 1986 and brought with him to Ohio State. Darrell Hazell didn't know anything about the book before arriving to Ohio State in 2004 but quickly learned its importance to the program. Early in each meeting, there was "quiet time" when certain portions of the book were read. Again at night, it was studied. Hazell quickly became enamored with it. And it had nothing to do with its masterful description of schemes and tactics to win on the field — of all the prose and poetry in the book, none of it is in the most familiar language to coaches and players: Xs and Os. It was because the book spoke to more than football. Its purpose was to provide the principles and foundation for how to become a better person, and in doing so, ultimately becoming a better player, better teammate and even a better coach. It preaches unselfishness. It offers encouragement and wisdom. It addresses how to handle adversity. It targets discipline and accountability. "It's really the life's blood of the football program," Hazell said. 4 • Gold and Black IllustrateD • volume 23, issue 6 Coach: Darrell Hazell (0-0 at Purdue; 16-10 overall, third season) All-time record: 592-515-48 Big Ten record: 344-373-33 Big Ten championships: Eight (1918-tri, 1929, 1931-tri, 1932-co, 1943-co, 1952-co, 1967-tri, 2000-tri) Bowl record: 9-8 Offensive formation: Pro style, multiple Defensive formation: 4-3 base Letterwinners returning/ lost: 48/22 Starters returning/lost: 11/11 Last time went to a bowl: 2012 unlocking more tomorrows our mission is discovery our goal is to cure cancer. cancerresearch.purdue.edu GBIprint.com GoldandBlack.com
