Weekly Pic Tom Campbell There was reason to celebrate as Kurt Freytag ended the Boilermakers' nine-quarter scoring drought on this 2-yard scoring reception with 5:44 left before halftime. It made for a great visual along with the special helmets Purdue wore for Military Appreciation Day. The Toughest of Years To Date If you measure how the Boilermakers fared as compared to the oddsmakers predictions, this has been the roughest year in recent memory. The good thing is, there are still three games to turn it around. To explain the graphic below, the Boilermakers' minus-97 figure means they have lost by 97 points more than the oddsmakers predicted in games to date. Here is how this season compares with others, dating back to 1997. 2013 -97 2012 -66.5 (6-7) 2001 -49 (6-6) 2010 -45.5 2005 -38.5 This Week In Purdue History Nov. 14, 1970 • In the first nationally televised game at Ross-Ade Stadium in five years, the Boilermakers nearly upset No. 3 Ohio State on an icy, snowy day in West Lafayette. Stanley Brown returned a kickoff for a touchdown to provide Purdue with its only offense, and nearly took another one the distance after Ohio State had moved ahead with Fred Schram's 30-yard game-winning field goal. But a shoestring tackle saved the day for Ohio State. Nov. 15, 1997 • After a two-inch snowfall the night before, the Boilermakers could never get on good footing against Penn State in a 42-17 home loss. Coach Joe Tiller's 19th-ranked team battled hard to keep the game interesting before Joe Paterno's sixth-ranked squad blew it open. Purdue had no answer for Curtis Enis, who gained 186 yards in 37 carries, but its own three turnovers didn't help either. Nov. 13, 2004 • Coming off a four-game losing streak, Purdue battled back to beat Ohio State 24-17. The Boilermakers, and their starting quarterback Brandon Kirsch, were in control of the game for much of the way, leading 17-13 at the half. But it took senior quarterback Kyle Orton coming off the bench to rally the Boilermakers with a last-minute game-winning drive to allow Purdue to become bowl eligible for the eighth-straight time under Tiller.
