The win over the Cardinals, a school that might be on the bubble for the NCAA Tournament in March, was a good one, with Purdue surging to a lead early in the second half, then holding on in the final minutes. Purdue took control similarly vs. the Jaguars, hitting a doubledigit margin early in the second b o x e s and never being threatened. Here are our takeaways from Purdue's victories: S KK Houser is playing great, perhaps the best two-game stretch of her career. Purdue made a wise move in getting the senior off the ball Flash Forward Opponent: Toledo Location: Savage Arena When: 2 p.m. Sunday Notables: The Rockets are coached by former Boilermaker player Tricia Cullop. She guided Toledo to Mid-American Conference regular-season titles in 2010-11 and 2012-13. … Junior Inma Zanoguera was named the MAC West Division Player-of-the-Week Monday after averaging 17.5 points and 12 rebounds in two games. … Toledo is 1-1, having lost to Drexel before beating Mississippi Valley State in the Glass City Tournament that it hosts. … Toledo has hit only 35-of-63 free throws through its first two games. … Purdue leads the series 6-0, having last played in 2010. Being only 5-foot6, she's not a typical 3 player; regardless, she has a scorer's mentality and a range of abilities, from hitting deep threes, to mid-range to spinning balls in near the basket. And she's not a bad rebounder either. Sharon Versyp has wanted a scoring 3, having not had one since KiKi Freeman in 2009. If Houser keeps up the scoring pace, opponents will likely have to focus more on her and less on Courtney Moses. We'll see how it develops. S It seems only a matter of time until Whitney Bays is in the starting lineup. Purdue's not getting off to very good starts and Bays is playing well off the bench. The junior forward brings energy and an attack mentality. Versyp wants to bring Bays along slowly, understandably so considering she's had such an extensive injury history. But Bays' play to open the season might force Versyp to speed up the timeline. S Purdue appears to have some depth; whether that continues to look the case during the Big Ten remains to be seen. But for now, Versyp can comfortably go 12 deep. Freshman Ashley Morrisette is the last guard off the bench but looks at ease running the point. She isn't trying to do too much and is hitting shots, making her first two triples before finally missing against IUPUI. Camille Redmon, a 6-4 center, will play in the right situations. She's a limited offensive player, but if she can limit turnovers then her defense can shine. She had four blocks in only six minutes against the Jags. j GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 10  •  40
