But when Danny Etling was named the starter back on Aug. 18, it wasn't any great surprise. Backup Austin Appleby might have been slightly bet- ter than Etling in training camp, but not enough so to unseat the incum- bent in the most visible position on the field. But whether it is Etling or Appleby or someone else leading the charge from behind center in 2014, it won't matter much if the three guys (from left Jordan Roos, Robert Kugler and Jason King) in the fore- ground of the picture can't get their job done. Actually, it will take all five on the line of scrimmage performing at a high level to provide the protection nec- essary for the Boilermakers to do what ON THE COVER In the middle of an August rain shower, Danny Etling took time to pose on the concourse of Ross-Ade Stadium. The sophomore will be the first Boilermaker quarterback since Kyle Orton (2001-02) to start at the position in his first two years on campus.
