GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 1 • 20 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com K ory Sheets' season has ended, and with it perhaps his dream of another chance in the NFL. After a successful stint in the CFL, the former Boilermaker saw his NFL season cut short when he tore his left Achilles' tendon during the Raiders' preseason game Fri- day. Four days later, as NFL teams trimmed their rosters to 75, Oak- land waived the running back. "A dream deferred ... out for the year," Sheets posted on his Twit- ter account after the injury. In three preseason games, Sheets rushed 12 times for 51 yards — an average of 4.3 yards per carry — and caught five passes for seven yards. He also returned two kick- offs for 56 yards. In early August, as he started training camp with the Raiders, he thought that this season might mark his last oppor- tunity for an NFL job. "I have to go in and make sure I'm on point at all times," he thought then. Sheets, 29, might not have been a lock to make Oakland's 53-man squad. He was thought to be competing with Latavius Murray as the team's No. 3 running back and kick returner. It comes after Sheets had a very successful tenure with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. There, he twice finished second in the league in rushing yards, totaling 2,578 on the ground. And when he was MVP of the Grey Cup last season, he had 197 yards rushing, a league record, in helping the Roughriders to a title. Sheets, Purdue's career touchdowns leader with 54, was undrafted in 2009, but was briefly with San Francisco and Miami, but a torn Achilles then derailed his chances. OTHER NFL CUTS Three of Purdue's four rookies made it through the first round of NFL cuts. But the news wasn't good for undrafted defensive end Greg Latta, who was let go by Denver. It leaves Ricardo Allen, Kevin Pam- phile and Bruce Gaston as active Purdue rookies. Earlier, former Purdue wide receiver/ cornerback Royce Adams was waived by the Cleveland Browns. Final preseason games are Thursday night, with teams needing to be down to their 53-man rosters by Saturday. BREES BIG IN RETURN After missing the first two New Orleans' preseason games due to a strained oblique, Drew Brees looked in midseason form in Game 3. In Indianapolis on Friday, the veteran quarterback was 9-of-15 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns, leading back- to-back 80-yard drives in the Saints' win over the Colts in Lucas Oil Stadium. But his performance paled in compari- son to news a few days later, when Brees and his wife, Brittany, welcomed a baby girl to the family. The 20-inch, 7-pound, 7-ounce baby, whose name has not yet been made public, was born on Monday evening, join- ing brothers Baylen, Bowen and Callen. "She's already got daddy wrapped around her little finger and is only less than 24 hours old," he told assembled Saints me- dia on Tuesday.
