Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look
back at our favorite covers while reflecting what was going on at the time.
In 2014 terms, the cover of Volume 1, Issue 1 couldn't
be more politically incorrect. The Aug. 31, 1990 version,
the first regular-season issue of Gold and Black Illustrat-
ed, depicts sophomore quarterback Eric Hunter holding
a rifle with Big Ten targets (actually trash cans) in the
background. In the issue, Hunter said, "I expect to take
this team to a winning season." Hunter was referred to in
the issue as "Young Randall," as he had some of the qual-
ities of Philadelphia Eagles star Randall Cunningham.
The staff of Gold and Black picked Purdue fifth in the
conference, but things didn't turn out that way for the
Boilermakers.
Under fourth-year coach Fred Akers, Purdue
struggled to
a 2-9 record,
finishing ninth
in the league.
Akers was dis-
missed after
the season.
The issue also featured an extensive interview with
Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who was being introduced
to Big Ten media for the first time after it had been an-
nounced a few months earlier that the Lions were joining
the Big Ten, though they wouldn't compete until 1993.
In the story, Paterno said, "I made up my mind to coach
until I am 70. I am 63 now."
He coached until he was 84, resigning in the 2011 sea-
son during a difficult period for Penn State.
