Ra'Zahn Howard — expected to be
one of the more pivotal players on
defense — has been slow to return
from hip, groin and knee injuries
suffered on the third day of train-
ing camp.
After not taking any snaps with
the first-team defense and rarely
much with the second team except
for a handful of snaps in an interior
run period on Tuesday, Howard
spent more time with the No. 1 de-
fense Wednesday, including during
team periods. But he likely won't
play a full game Saturday.
Conditioning was an issue
with Howard during his first sea-
son with the Boilermakers, but he
insisted he was in better shape
for Year 2. But the extended break
from practicing has set him back
to start 2014.
"He's not in great shape, but
he brought his power back with
him at least," Hazell said.
At least Purdue has a capable
backup in junior Ryan Watson,
who has started four career games
and has played extensively with
the first-team defense throughout
camp.
Another injured player to
watch is receiver Dan Monteroso,
who started doing more team
work this week after missing
about three weeks with what Ha
-
zell called a "bruised" knee. With
Posey out, a healthier Monteroso
could factor into the offense from
the slot.
HAVE A SEAT
Starting free safety Landon
Feichter will miss the first half
against Western Michi-
gan after being ejected
for targeting in the sec-
ond half against Indiana
in the regular-season fi-
nale last season.
Sophomore Aus-
tin Logan will get the
start in Feichter's place,
though the senior likely
will move back into get-
ting the bulk of the reps
in the second half.
Logan had a "very productive"
couple weeks of train-
ing camp, Hazell said,
as the safety was active
and getting his hands
on balls for either de-
flections, forced fumbles or inter-
ceptions.
"I think camp went very well
