Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memorable covers
while reflecting what was going on at the time.
Little did anyone know what was to come a week later. But this image of senior quarterback
Billy Dicken on the sidelines in the closing moments of a 36-22 opening day loss to Toledo on Sept. 6, 1997,
seemed to capture the feeling among Purdue fans. New coach Joe Tiller's team, as it appeared at the time, was
going to struggle. Dicken, who was benched late for a true freshman named Drew Brees, was going to struggle.
It looked like the entire team was going to struggle through another losing season, which would have made 13
in a row. But it all changed a week later as Tiller, Dicken and the rest of the Boilermakers pulled one of its great
-
est upsets, a 28-17 win over No. 12 Notre Dame en route to one of the biggest turnaround seasons in Purdue
football history. By the way, in the Sept. 12, 1997 issue, the crack staff of Gold and Black picked the Boilermakers
to lose 38-10 to the Irish. We have been wrong before and we will be wrong again.
