Andy Garcia, who played last week, probably will get snaps at strongside linebacker behind Gilliam. Ezechukwu's move caused a shakeup at rush end, too, mean- ing freshman Gelen Robinson likely will get his first career de- fensive snaps against Central Michigan. Gelen Robinson played only on special teams in Week 1. Williams honored After an interception, seven tackles and two pass breakups on defense and two 20-plus-yard punt returns against Western Michigan, Frankie Williams was one of four players nationally to be named to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll. Players make the list for "ver- satile, single-game performances." The Paul Hornung Award is annually given to the "most ver- satile" player in major college football. The winner will be hon- ored in late January. "I think of myself as a football playmaker. Period," said Williams, speaking to his abilities on de- fense and as a punt returner. "If the ball is in my hands, I feel like I'm pretty dangerous." The last time Purdue had two punt returns of 25-plus yards in a game was by Anthony Cham- bers against Penn State in 2003. In that game, Chambers had five returns for 149 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown and a 49- yard return that set up another score in Purdue's 28-14 win in Ross-Ade Stadium. Patterson ineligible Freshman offensive lineman Martesse Patterson was thought to be a close call to be enrolled in Purdue this summer but apparently qualified at least partially in time to enroll in the fall — he was working with the pro- gram, lifting weights and practicing, through the season's opener. But on Monday, Hazell said Patterson "came up a little short on the eligibility" and won't play this season. "He can practice," Hazell said. "He just can't play." Purdue already had an aca- demic casualty in the freshman class when safety Juan Jenkins didn't qualify.
