Regardless of the combina- tions, though, Posey expects the passing game to break out Satur- day. "If they play zone, we should have a pretty nice day passing, that's what we hope for," Posey said. "If we can be consistent and catch the ball, like we should, then we should have a big day." Linebacker shakeup With starting strongside linebacker Jimmy Herman out at least one game, likely two, after breaking the thumb on his right hand late in the game against Western Michigan, Purdue shuffled its linebacking corps two-deep. In Herman's place, senior Joe Gilliam will slide over to start at Sam, a position he played on Sat- urday but hadn't much previously. Last season, Gil- liam was the team's starting middle linebacker, but he moved to weakside line- backer in the spring and was in a battle with fresh- man Ja'Whaun Bentley for that spot throughout training camp. Gilliam played all three positions against Western Michigan en route to getting 57 snaps, unof- ficially, against the Broncos. He played about 17 snaps on strong- side. Herman's injury isn't only af- fecting Gilliam, though. It's led to shuffling the entire two-deep. Danny Ezechukwu has been moved, at least for now, back to weakside linebacker after play- ing rush end for most of camp. He was moved to the rush end spot during camp, though, from Will. Garrett Hudson is listed as Sean Robinson's backup at mid- dle linebacker, and there's a good chance Hudson will have to play because Robinson may not make it a full game. Last week, Robin- son didn't practice while waiting for an infection in his right leg to heal but still started. He faded a bit, though, getting only 12 of his 41 snaps in the second half. Robinson didn't practice on Tom Campbell After getting his starting opportunity yanked at the last minute when Sean Robinson played against Western, Joe Gilliam will get his first start of 2014 on Saturday because of Jimmy Herman's broken thumb. in The OppOsiTe cOrner Comment's from last week's and next week's opposing coaches: Western Michigan coach p.J. Fleck "When you look offensively, I think we moved the ball particularly well. I thought our whole team was a little jumpy at the beginning, especially during warmups you could see it. "(Western Michigan players) believed we were going to win. At 37-34, we thought we were going to win. You could feel it on the side- lines, all we had to do was get the ball back. We failed on a bunch of third-and-longs all day and that just absolutely killed us. Overall, I think there's a lot of positives to take from the game, but we also have to get better in a lot of areas." central Michigan coach Dan enos "(Purdue is) a much-improved football team. You can see Coach (Darrell) Hazell has got them going in the right direction. They're going to be a very formidable opponent. Any time you have to go into a Big Ten stadium and play, it's very difficult. "(Raheem Mostert has) great vision, runs hard, and they were giving him some holes and doing a great job up front blocking. They played hard and their schemes were good. They've got a couple guys that they get the ball to who are very ex - plosive players."
