Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illus-
trated, we look back at memorable covers while reflecting what was
going on at the time.
With it being Notre Dame game week for the last time in six years, it
was hard to pick between these two covers that depicted great Boilermaker moments in
the series with the Irish. Near left is the cover from the Sept. 19, 1997 issue, showing quar-
terback Billy Dicken being hoisted toward the Boilermaker heavens by defensive tackle
Greg Smith after the Purdue's transformative upset win. Dicken played a near-perfect
game in the Boilermakers' 28-17 upset over the No. 12 Irish, who entered the game a
20-point favorite.
Yet, it is hard to top the look on Drew Brees' face as he sings "Hail Purdue" with his team-
mates moments after Purdue's victory over the Irish in 1999. Brees, who has donned the
cover of Gold and Black 21 times during his days at Purdue, had lots of heartbreak in games
against ND, including last-second losses in 1998 and 2000. But legendary Purdue quarter-
backs are made with wins over Notre Dame, and Brees' "Sweet Revenge" fits that bill.
