T
he graphic on Page 3 is an in-
dication of how Purdue has
made a habit of upsetting Notre
Dame over the years. We rank the
biggest stunners in the series,
which dates back to 1896:
5
1954 Len Dawson tossed
four touchdown passes
for the second straight week as
Purdue ended Notre Dame's 20-
game winning streak with a 27-14
win in South Bend. Dawson was
known as college football's "Gold
-
en Boy" after the win.
4
1984 A three-touchdown
underdog, Purdue shocked
the college football world with a
23-21 win in Indianapolis. It was
the coming out party for quar-
terback Jim Everett. More on this
game on Pages 12-13.

1950 The game that really
put Purdue on the football
map, the Boilermakers snapped
ND's 39-game winning streak in a
rainy Notre Dame Stadium. Soph-
omore quarterback Dale Samuels
was among the heroes.

1997 If the 1950 game put
Purdue football on the map,
the '97 win returned the program
to relevance for the first time in
13 years. It launched one of the
best turnaround seasons in school
annals.

1974 This one tops the list
just because the Boilermak-
ers were five-touchdown under-
dogs. Buoyed by 24 unanswered
points in the first quarter, Coach
Alex Agase's team hung on for a
31-20 win. j

over Notre Dame
A 52-yard scoring run by Pete Gross helped Purdue to 24 unanswered points in the opening
quarter of the 1974 shocker.
