GoldanDBlack express • volume 25, express 3 • 24 BY STACY CLARDIE SClardie@GoldandBlack.com A look at the top plays and top players from Purdue's 38-17 loss to Central Michigan Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium. Top plays No.3 After an opener in which Danny Etling didn't get sacked or throw an in- terception, both occurred on Pur- due's second series against Cen- tral Michigan. After right tackle J.J. Prince whiffed on a cut block, allowing Etling to get sacked on just a four- man rush on Purdue's fifth offen- sive play, the Boilermakers were set up in a third-and-long situation. Needing 14 yards for the first down and lining up with three re- ceivers and tight end Justin Sinz in the backfield with Raheem Mo- stert, Danny Etling took a shotgun snap and got great protection to scan the field. But the option he chose didn't work out well. Etling tried to make a deep sideline throw to B.J. Knauf. But the pass floated, allowing Central Michigan defensive back Brandon Greer to step in front and snatch the ball. Greer returned the inter- ception 57 yards, quickly giving the Chippewas a lead. No.2 Central Michigan ex- tended the lead to 21-7, but Purdue drove the field, pushing the ball inside CMU's 30- yard line with a fourth-and-one situation in the second quarter. The Boilermakers used their typical short-yardage personnel — two backs and three tight ends — and Mostert bullied his way to a two-yard gain and a first down. One problem: Re- ceiver DeAngelo Yancey was on the field. That penalty for il- legal participation ne- gated the first down and forced Purdue to attempt a 47-yard field goal. Paul Griggs missed it. No.1 The Chip- p e w a s built the lead to 28-10 after Ja'Whaun Bentley had a busted coverage on the tight end, result- ing directly in a touch- down pass, and then Purdue really fell apart. On its next two of- fensive series, Mostert fumbled after pick- ing up a first down on fourth-and-short and Etling threw another interception, effectively ending Purdue's chances for a miracle comeback. j c e n t r a l m i c h i g a n 3 8 , p u r d u e 1 7 A Look BAck At sAturdAy's top pLAys And pLAyers purdue vs. ceNTral michigaN game sTory
