After the game, Coach Darrell Hazell wasn't prepared to name a starter for Notre Dame. If Appleby gets the call Saturday, he will be the first Boilermaker quarterback since Scott Campbell in 1980 to make his first college start against Notre Dame. A pivotal moment in the game came near the 10-minute mark of the second quarter when Boilermaker safety Frankie Williams was ejected for a targeting penalty. It came on the first play from scrimmage after Purdue had gained some momentum, cutting the Chippewas lead to 14-7. Four plays later, CMU scored, making it 21-7 and the visitors were never seriously threatened again. Purdue was plagued with penalties at inopportune times, including two in the first half on kickoff returns by Raheem Mostert. For the game, the Boilermakers had 69 yards in seven penalties. Etling was hit and the ball popped loose, it went right into the hands of offensive tackle J.J. Prince. Prince returned the fumble three yards.
