But Hazell said he doesn't want this QB situation to be called a "competition" and doesn't con- sider it a "huge issue." And yet, the second-year coach decided to give backup Austin Appleby some snaps with the first-team offense on Tuesday during team periods and then had Appleby got some work with the No. 1 unit against the scout defense Wednesday. After Wednesday's practice, Hazell said he wasn't sure how he'd handle quarterback reps on Thurs - day, the last practice of the week. "We'll look at the film, see where we are with it and make a decision before we come out (for practice)," Hazell said. Players can qualify for the list, which was originated from Hazell's decree of "A Players Must Get A's" by getting a 3.0 average or better for the semester. The Boilermakers had 40 players make the list in the fall. The team posted a 2.78 GPA for the spring, up from a 2.65 in the fall, and improved its cumulative GPA to 2.77, up from 2.75 prior to the spring semester. It is the highest team GPA for football in at least 20 years.
