S Purdue spent roughly half the game, maybe less, in zone on defense and had success with it, albeit against a team it probably could have defended solely in man-to-man and had just as much success. It remains to be seen how much Purdue will play zone, but it definitely will in some form or another, and its offensive needs might predicate its defensive alignments. For example, when Purdue wants Mathias and Ste- phens out there together for their offensive skill or Hammons and Haas side-by-side for their "ulti- mate size," as Painter calls it, they'll likely have to play zone. Not sure it's as great a red flag as it may seem considering Pur- due's recent history.
