BR ANDON SHUMAN: The day Long came to campus to commit, Purdue called Shuman to inform him only one spot remained at his position. The Floridian wanted it, so he took it, the Rivals.com three-star pros- pect choosing Purdue sight-unseen over early offers from Kentucky, Illi- nois, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and many others. The 5-11, 160ish-pound Gulliv- er Prep DB will obviously have to get bigger, but it was his speed and athleticism that made him a pros- pect of significant interest for many schools. "I'm an athlete, but I play corner most of the time," Shuman said. "Purdue recruited me for corner. They said they like my technique and my skills. "The things people like most about me as a defensive back are my cover skills, my ball-hawking and that I'm a hard hitter. I think I'm a pretty good tackler." WHAT'S NEXT? Purdue may be set for another run on commitments, with Landers seemingly likely to join the class and Wegher and/or Johnson — both of them known for their speed above all else — potentially on the verge of early decisions also. After that, Purdue needs se- nior Paul Griggs' successor at place-kicker in this class, a position that often falls into place early. The Boilermaker staff closely evaluated all specialist options at its camps in June. Purdue didn't initially plan to sign a quarterback in 2015, but upper- classman Danny Etling's transfer to LSU might have changed things, as the Boilermaker staff might want to carry more than just three scholar- ship QBs come next season, partic- ularly with Austin Appleby moving into his senior year. Otherwise, the defensive line and tight end remain enduring needs. Purdue will go into the fall in all likelihood in the vicinity of dou- ble-digit commitments, months be- fore its standard recruiting hotbed period takes place. Under Hazell, Purdue has hosted virtually all of its official visits in December and January and there would be little reason to believe that won't be the case again this year. j
