10 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED Players To Watch During Training Camp 5 Evyn Cooper: In the spring, Purdue had only three scholarship cornerbacks, leaving plenty of room for a freshman to find an immediate home in the depth chart. Cooper might be the best bet, because he has the size to make an early impact. 4 Cameron Cermin: The junior missed spring with a shoulder injury, as did J.J. Prince, leav- ing the right tackle position open to a rotation of players. Cermin will be healthy for training camp — Prince is a bit further behind — making him a viable candidate to start Game 1. 3 Antoine Miles: Miles was likely to be watched anyway, since he had a solid spring, but his importance is heightened after the arrest of rush end starter Gelen Robinson. Punishment likely will come. Is the position wide open? This might be Miles' biggest chance. 2 Danny Anthrop: Purdue needs Anthrop to be the player he was emerging to be last season, before the knee injury sent him to the sidelines. He's felt good all summer, but going full speed in training camp is the next biggest hurdle in his comeback. 1 Austin Appleby / David Blough: No duh. Quarterbacks will be watched closely, with Appleby holding an advantage — perhaps only a slight advantage? — over Blough headed into camp. But a third name, Elijah Sindelar, lingers as well. For seemingly the 100th consecutive training camp, (actually since 2008) the quarterback position remains in question. —Kyle Charters "I'm of the opinion — and this will never change with me — that you're about as good as your quarterback is and I think they're getting that position sorted out." Former coach Joe Tiller when asked about the Boilermakers this season "If I had a choice, like if I was a free agent, I most likely would have picked the Cowboys." Ryan Russell, who grew up in a suburb of Dallas, after the Cowboys made him a fifth-round NFL Draft pick in May "I know for a fact that they all have a little chip on their shoulder, because they realize that we've underachieved a little bit."
