SX CREATE PALMER EVENTS CENTER: 900 BARTON SPRINGS ROAD 3:30 PM Palmer Events Center: Room 4-5 Lessons Learned from Educational Makerspaces An educational makerspace can be anything from an entire building to a rolling cart. We'll hold a discussion with educational makerspace pros on what works and what doesn't, benefits of different kinds of workshops, how to integrate with other learning goals, and learning through discovery. Oren Connell, Patrick Benfield, Tim Ziegler Austin, Kami Wilt Panel • Beginner H Convergence 3:30 PM Palmer Events Center: SX Create Stage Science Fair to Science Fact: Gen Z Scores an A With new tools at their disposal, high schoolers are accessing technologies previously reserved for industry and academia. If they want a 3D printer, they order it from Ama- zon and have it in two days; if they need to see how it works they go to YouTube. They no longer need to be in big buildings to innovate. Panelists will present some of the latest tech that just happens to come from teens. Elliot Kotek, Pia Sen, Shubham Banerjee Panel • Intermediate H Convergence 5:00 PM Palmer Events Center: Room 4-5 Shut Up and Make: Turning Passion into Profession We all have our day jobs – but 99 percent of the time, passion projects and getting paid are mutually exclusive. Instead of just bitching, find time to create – whether through art, photography, design or music. During this panel, hear inspiring stories about how simply doing what you love can open unexpected doors. Chuck Anderson, Jason Peterson, Jeff Staple, Sophia Chang Panel • Beginner H Convergence 5:00 PM Palmer Events Center: SX Create Stage A Robot Companion: Human's Best Friend? There is ample and growing evidence that the physical presence of a social robot leads to greater engagement and more positive outcomes for people than the screen-based counterparts. Come see MIT social roboticist, Cynthia Breazeal, share how her social robot Jibo, an attentive and expressive home helper, and other social robots are creat- ing space for humanized engagement with technology. Cynthia Breazeal Solo • Advanced H Convergence SUNDAY, MARCH 13 11:00 AM Palmer Events Center: Room 1-2 Open-Source and 3D-Printer: Redefining the Human Body Exiii is trying to turn the bionic hand more "casual" in terms of price and design by using 3D-printing and open-source. HACK- berry has been printed and customized around the globe. Other players, like Open Bionics and e-nable, have also begun address- ing bionic hand issues. How will bionic hand open-source and 3D-printing redefine the human body and change the medical service and business models? Genta Kondo, Shigeru Kobayashi, Toshinari Shimokawa, Ivan Owen Panel • Intermediate H Convergence 11:00 AM Palmer Events Center: Room 4-5 Check Online for Session Scheduled at This Time Things change! To date, the technology we interact with has been largely two-dimensional. When those realities blend – when the barriers between 2D and 3D come tumbling down – everything we understand about how industries design and manufacture today will be transformed and redefined. Shane Wall, Peter Weijmarshausen Dual • Advanced H Convergence 12:30 PM Palmer Events Center: Room 4-5 Get Messy in the Library: Art, Making and Tinkering Creative inspiration is a tricky thing to pin down; for the artists highlighted here, the spark can be traced to a library. The Library as Incubator Movement is catching fire. This session includes an in-depth exploration of Madison Public Library's pop-up Bub- bler program, where local creatives are employed to offer hands-on activities for peo- ple of all ages. Laura Damon-Moore, Trent Miller Dual • Intermediate H Convergence 12:30 PM Palmer Events Center: SX Create Stage Ponytrap: Channeling Your Own Weird Vision In this session, the speakers will discuss building robot drums and achieving goals: how we became makers on accident and how we learned on the fly. Using Ponytrap's machines as a narrative, the discussion will focus on the broader topic of how to drill down into the thing you want and build the thing you need. Quentin Thomas-Oliver Dual • Intermediate 3:30 PM Palmer Events Center: Room 1-2 Build IoT: Making Music on a Microcontroller Ever thought of building your own electronic drum kit? In this two hour workshop we'll take a microcontroller and some sensors, and start generating some music. We'll take an ARM mbed enabled developer board, and show how you can program it. Besides learning a lot about music and wave forms, this session will prepare you for building any device that connects to the Internet of Things (IoT). Jan Jongboom Workshop • Beginner H Convergence 3:30 PM Palmer Events Center: SX Create Stage DIY Intelligence Until very recently, the complexity & costs of the technology needed to develop intelli- gent, autonomous machines were prohibitive for all but the largest organizations. Now, for the first time, makers, researchers & small startups can access the technology to develop their own intelligent, autonomous machines. This panel will discuss what the availability of this technology means for our world.
