RAIL: Amtrak's Silver Service/ Palmetto trains off er daily ser- vice between Savannah and New York; Washington, D.C.; Charleston, South Carolina; and Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and Miami, Florida. INTERSTATES: I-95 runs north/south and I-16 runs east/west. Getting Around WALKING: America's fi rst planned city, Savannah was designed by Gen. James Oglethorpe with 24 tree-lined squares meant to serve as public gathering spaces. Today, 22 squares remain, still used as gathering spaces, as well as the perfect respites and walking areas. (Be sure to observe cross- walks.) Plus, Savannah is one of the few cities in the nation where you can take your drink to-go. Just make sure your cocktail is in a paper or plastic cup, measuring 16 ounces or less, within the parameters of the Historic District — River to Jones streets and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to East Broad Street. DRIVING: Traffi c around the squares fl ows counterclockwise and always has the right-of-way; all other traffi c should yield. Be watchful of one-way streets. Also, keep your cell phone tucked away — Geor- gia is a "hands-free" state. PARKING: In Savannah: There are more than 3,000 metered spaces in down- town Savannah; fi ve public garages (Bryan, Liberty, State and Whitaker streets, and the Robinson Parking Garage on Montgom- ery Street) for paid parking; three parking lots on River Street; and parking lots at the Savannah Civic Center and the Offi cial Savannah Visitor Information Center. For added convenience, take advantage of Congress Street Parking garage's car wash. The ParkSavannah app, available free from the App Store, Google Play or parksav. net, lets you pay for parking with your smartphone. The app warns you when you are running low on meter time and allows you to extend your payment if your visit runs longer than expected. A Visitor Day Pass is available for $24 for two days and $15 for a single day at Mobility & Parking Services, 100 E. Bryan St. (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday).
