SURROUNDING AREAS Chatham, Effi ngham and Bryan Counties Exploring the city's outlying areas offers a chance to uncover even more hidden gems and unique experiences. With points of interest for Civil War buffs, birders and everyone in between, Savannah's surrounding areas provide a compelling blend of culture, nature and history. C L A Y T O N L E E P H O T O G R A P H Y Port Wentworth Midtown Savannah: A charming district with tree-lined streets, Midtown boasts museums, parks, and eclectic dining options like Filipino fare at The Narra Tree. (It's also where you can catch a Savannah Bananas game.) Southside Savannah: Home to shopping centers, parks, the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus and EXHILARATE — Adventure Zone, a climate-controlled escape for little ones looking to burn some energy. Thunderbolt: A quaint, waterside community known for seafood restau- rants like Tubby's Tank House, a Thunderbolt eatery pairing fresh catches with live music and a scenic marina view. Wilmington Island and Whitemarsh Island: Salt marshes and water- ways are perfect for kayaking and boating on these residential islands. Explore Oatland Island Wildlife Center, a wildlife sanctuary with native animals and educational programs, then refuel at Flying Fish Bar & Grill or Friendship Coffee Company. Gateway: This busy stretch of Interstate 95 that intersects with Abercorn Street and Fort Argyle Road features hotels aplenty, with the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens nearby. Go shopping for kitschy souvenirs at Keller's Flea Market, then stop for lunch at 3Tops BBQ, a veteran-owned joint that serves combo plates, barbecue by the pound and fall-off-the- bone St. Louis-style ribs. Pooler: A growing suburb with shopping centers, golf courses and the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, all convenient to the neighboring Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. Port Wentworth: A historic district with antebellum architecture and picturesque landscapes.
