ISSUE 86 / 2016 TECHNOLOGY No more tough decisions between which apps, songs and beloved images and videos to delete in order to make some much needed space on your smartphone. A start-up company called Nextbit have pitched a smartphone named "Robin", which promises to never run out of storage space. They pitched the concept on Kickstarter with a goal of $500,000 in order to turn their project into a reality. To date, they have raised $1,362,343 and the phone is finally complete and on sale to the public. The phone has 32GB of storage on the phone itself and 100GB of storage on the Cloud. Robin works by moving your least used files and moving them onto the Cloud for safekeeping until you need them again, at which point you can download them straight back onto your device. Whenever it's connected to Wi-Fi, Robin automatically backs up your files and notifies you via four dots that light up on the back. No matter which phone you have, the one issue that everyone seems to face is lack of storageā€¦ until now! So many apps that get made these days, it's not a surprise they often die out (or get killed off) by bigger companies. One giant in particular seems to have an insatiable hunger, Apple. NEXTBIT'S ROBIN "NEVER RUNS OUT OF STORAGE" 5 APPS KILLED BY APPLE F.lux F.lux is the newest addition to Apple's obituary page. F.lux let you intelligently reduce the emission of blue light which might stop you from getting a good night's rest. Due to Apple's closed app ecosystem, F.lux had to build an app outside of the iOS and that drove Apple crazy, the app was shut down and replaced by Apple's "Night Shift" which was the exact same as F.lux. Auxo Being one of the most used pieces of software to jailbreak iPhones, Auxo let your iPhone do exactly what you want it to do. However, the features that this app provided all met their doom when Apple updated their OS to iOS 7 back in 2013. Swell Probably the best app out there for podcasts, having be labelled the, "Pandora for Talk Radio" and purchased by Apple in 2014. Just two days after being purchased, the app was gone. Likely to become part of Apple iTunes Radio and Podcast services, even still they don't compare to Swell. iFlow Reader iFlow Reader was a nifty little app for any book enthusiasts, with useful features and decent sales, the company seemed to be a success. After Apple showed up with their policy shift in 2011 requiring apps selling books or other media to pay 30% of their profits to Apple, the founder of iFlow Reader stated that the company didn't make a profit over 30%, meaning that they were actually losing money per transaction. 20
