We have been so wrapped up in Brexit mania and all the chaos that has followed that a few deeply concerning news items slipped through unnoticed. UN SLAMS TORY AUSTERITY The biggest news to have gone almost ignored is a damning report from the UN about the state of the Tories austerity policies. In the report the UN's Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights said they're 'seriously concerned' at the levels of inequality across the UK. The current levels of austerity and reforms on social security that have been unleashed by the Tories breaches the UK governments obligations to human rights. After looking at the evidence from Just Fair that included increases in unemployment, foodbank usage, and the housing crisis the UN committee expressed deep concern about 'the disproportionate adverse impact that austerity measures' are having. There deep cuts into public services has seen budgets for everything drop, and the slump in benefits and continuous changes to people's entitlements are having devastating effects on some of the most marginalised and vulnerable in UK society. More @guestlist.net Never one to not speak her opinions, she criticises the factors behind Brexit from both sides. 'The campaign for remain and leave was full of lies. They weren't giving an actual explanation of any outcome'. She hints at the major issues which led to the outcome saying that 'people in Britain are sick of the 1% having everything' and claims that the way previous events such as the London riots have been dealt with should have been better. 'That was kind of washed over... there was a lack of research into understanding what happened'. Upon being questioned on influence of the music industry, she acknowledges that most musicians do not speak out because of their worries about album sales and suffering abuse on social media. 'It's a shame that more of that doesn't happen. When I look back, I see people like Nina Simone and Bob Dylan doing this'. When asked for any advice to young people she urges those 'to have confidence in what they believe in, be informed, rather than listening to hearsay and realise that they do have a lot of power'. Owen praises the rarity of Paloma as a mainstream musician who speaks out. We would certainly love to see more artists in this field standing up and being heard! Paloma Faith chats to Owen Jones about politics, its detachment from the modern world and the roles that musicians should be playing. PALOMA TALKS POLITICS AND WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT "The problem with politics today is that it's not speaking a modern language, it needs updating, you should be able to vote online for example."
