GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 28 • 12 BY KYLE CHARTERS KCharters@GoldandBlack.com S haron Versyp has signed a two- year contract extension, keep- ing her on the sidelines through the 2019-20 season. The extension was an- nounced by Purdue on Tuesday afternoon. The extension is Ver- syp's fifth since coming to Purdue in April, 2006; terms had not been released as of Friday afternoon. Versyp's last contract exten- sion, following the 2011-12 sea- son, included a $33,000 raise, with a guaranteed compensation pack- age of about $505,000 per year and bonus opportunities, tied to academic performance, athletic performance and attendance. The previous extension also included a stipulation that com- pensation would be reviewed again prior to 2015. "First and foremost, I appreci- ate the ongoing commitment and support from our administration – President Daniels, Morgan Burke and Nancy Cross — and the entire Purdue family," Versyp said in a statement. "It is an honor to serve as the head women's basketball coach at my alma mater, and I am extremely thankful and blessed. "My staff and I will continue working to bring talented stu- dent-athletes from Indiana and around the country to preserve and elevate our status as an elite program. We want to attract the very best young women to help us win championships while they earn a world-class education and develop into tomorrow's leaders." In eight seasons, Versyp has led Purdue to four Big Ten Tour- nament championships and two NCAA Tour- nament Elite Eight appear- ances. She has compiled a 183-88 record — an average of 23 wins per season and a .675 winning p e r c e n t a g e — including an 88-49 mark in the Big Ten and a 26-11 mark in the p o s t s e a s o n . Versyp is the second-winningest coach in school history, trailing only Lin Dunn (206). Versyp, who played at Purdue from 1984-88, has guided 25 play- ers to All-Big Ten accolades at Purdue, with four first-team se- lections, including senior guard Courtney Moses last season. Komara BacK at Purdue When Versyp set out to find a new assistant coach, the candi- dates' recruiting prow- ess was of top-most priority. And she thinks Kelly Komara, who was hired in early May to fill the spot vacated by Christy Smith, fills the criteria well. Why? Komara knows the program, being a critical part of Purdue's most successful sea- sons, the national championship in 1999 and runner-up finish two years later. And the personal- ity Komara displayed as a player — relentless and feisty, yet fun- loving — could play well on the recruiting trail. "I think a lot of recruiting is relationships," Komara said. "You have to build relationships with players, you have to build relation- ships with coaches. And one of the things that is deep in my heart that you can't fake is a passion for Purdue, and when you love a place it's easy to sell it. For me, it's always been that this is a special place for family, a place that I know can make and produce great players, because I've been around them and I've seen them. "… Taking my passion and my love for Purdue and getting those top-notch kids to believe in the same vision that we have is some- thing I think I can do." Komara replaces Smith, who left Purdue after three seasons to become the top assistant at her alma mater, Arkansas. Komara, a former point guard for the Boilermakers (1998-2002) who will coach guards, comes to Purdue from Albany, where she had been an assistant the last two seasons, helping the Great Danes to a 55-9 overall record and back-to-back NCAA Tourna- ment appearances. She also has previous coach- ing stops at Northwestern and Valparaiso and was the video co- w o m e n ' s ba s k e t ba l l : n e w s a n d n ot e s Double vertime versyp signs extension Tom Campbell Sharon Versyp signed a two-year contract extension, a month after nam- ing Nadine Morgan (right) her associate head coach. 2014-15 NoN-coNfereNce Schedule Date Opponent Time Nov. 9 FINDLAY (exh.)
