HEDELIN'S SUSPENSION SET David Hedelin, Purdue's touted ju- nior college offensive tackle signee, will play for the Boilermakers, just not right away. The native of Sweden will sit out the first three games of 2014 due to a sus- pension imposed by the NCAA, stem- ming from his participation with a club team in his home country after high school. The three-game ban, though, is good news, as Purdue was able to get it reduced from five. "It's (been re- duced) to three games and that's the final suspension," Hedelin wrote. "Not possible to get the suspension away for all the games, unfor- tunately." One the high- est-recruited JUCO tackles in the coun- try this past season as a sophomore at the City College of San Francisco, the former Michigan State commitment is slated to arrive on campus in June and should be eligible to play in Purdue's Sept. 20 non-conference finale against Southern Illinois. He'll sit out games against Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Notre Dame. Purdue plans now to use fellow JUCO offensive tackle signee Corey Clements at offensive guard, meaning sophomore J.J. Eight of those young men will be singled outby judges as finalists for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and the winner will be announced that evening, making him a candidate for the Indiana Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The "competition'' is based 40 percent on academics, 40 percent on athletics and 20 percent on citizenship, leadership and character. Highlighting the awards ceremony at this year's marquee event will be the induction of three gentlemen into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. They are former Purdue Heisman Trophy runner-up Leroy Keyes, former Super Bowl champion and Boilermaker star Mike Alstott and long-time high school coaching great Tim Roth of Winamac.
