In order to qual- ify, the Boilermak- ers finished strong in the final two rounds of the NCAA Regionals. Purdue posted the top score over those rounds (9-over par 585), besting champion Illinois by two strokes. Purdue's 288 in the second round was the program's third-best NCAA Re- gional round in school history (30 rounds played). The Boilermakers enter the Championships the lowest- ranked team (No. 48), accord- ing to the latest Golfweek/ Sagarin collegiate rankings, yet have a surprising 10-19-3 record against the other 29 teams in the field and own head-to-head wins over top- 25 squads Georgia, California, Arkansas, Auburn, South Caro- lina, Florida State and USC. Three of Purdue's top six players are freshmen (Austin Eoff, Philippe Schweizer and Fernando Barco) and two more (junior Enzo Perez and sopho- more Stuart MacDonald) will re- turn in 2014-15. Senior and No. 1 player Adam Schenk concludes his standout career in the 72-hole event. He was Pur- due's top finisher at the re- gional, placing 10th. Schenk, Perez and Eoff were named to the 25-mem- ber PING All-Midwest Re- gional Team, the Golf Coach- es Association of America (GCAA) announced. Schenk, a two-time recipient after earning the award as a freshman in 2011, was named a second-team All-Big Ten selection after averaging a team-best 72.36 strokes per round, the second-low- est average for any Purdue player since the 1997 season. The school announced Fri- day that it had hired Tony Er- sland, who had spent the last eight seasons as an assistant at Nebraska, as its head coach. Ersland replaces Scott Hinkel, who resigned following the season. "We had many qualified candidates, but in the end it was clear that Tony had emerged as our No. 1 choice," athletic di- rector Morgan Burke said in a Purdue release. "He presented a comprehensive plan for moving our wrestling program forward both in the Big Ten and nation- ally. His résumé as a coach and as a student-athlete is impres- sive, and it is clear he knows the look and feel of a champion- ship-caliber program." men's golf comPetes in ncaa chamPionshiPs Purdue The Purdue men's golf team hopes to make its mark at the NCAA Championships this weekend.
