But he's going to ease into 7-on-7 work, he said, and be care- ful not to have a setback. Not pushing too hard can be a tough task, though, knowing how im- portant this summer is for the receiving corps. "We made huge strides this spring, but over the summer, it is twice as long, I think we can make tremen- dous strides this summer in all areas of our game, rang- ing from simply catching the ball to reading cover- ages and knowing what routes and certain ways to release," Knauf said. "There's no room for us to be any- where near content. We re- ally have to constantly stress improvement and constant- ly improve." Macarthy didn't have sur- gery to repair a labral tear, so he's admittedly going to need to play smart. Once he regains mo- tion in the shoulder — he's close to that — he's expecting to be with conditioning and running with the team by June 16, the start of summer school. "I'm making great progress and just setting short-term goals for myself, like being able to run by June, getting my full strength by July and really tighten every- thing up in there since I'm not going to get surgery because I'd miss the season, and by Au- gust being able to go out with no restric- tions," Macarthy said. Purdue adds to Hall Former All-Amer- ican defensive line- man Dave Butz was named to the College Football Hall of Fame. Butz was Purdue's 15th overall selection to the Hall and fourth in the last nine years. "I was hoping it would happen," he said, "and I'm just grateful that it did. It's quite an honor to be selected for a select group like this." He was the recipi- ent of the Zipp Award as college football's outstanding player in 1972, as a senior, and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award. Over his career, Butz had 108 tackles, including 21 for loss. dawkins transfers With seniors Raheem Mo- stert and Akeem Hunt, rising underclassmen Keyante Green and David Yancey and poten- tial freshman contributor in D.J. Knox, Purdue already had a de- cent stable of running backs. Perhaps that's why Hazell didn't seem fazed by sopho- more Dalyn Dawkins' decision to leave Purdue. Dawkins will enroll at Colo- rado State and sit out a season due to NCAA transfer rules be- fore playing in 2015. "I think we're still in good shape there," Hazell said of Dawkins' absence. Dawkins told the Coloradoan he was unhappy with his situ- ation at Purdue be- cause the Boilermak- ers' offense was the "complete opposite" of what he was told it would be. "Purdue threw the ball all the time," he told the newspaper. "They told me they were going to be run- heavy." Dawkins was the team's backup run- ning back through the season's first five games. He got 104 of his unofficial 131 snaps in that span before es- sentially disappearing from the lineup after the first bye week. That timing also lined up with a significant personnel decision: Hazell benched Rob Henry for Danny Etling at quar- terback, and Purdue's offense shifted from a run-first option to more of a spread approach. In the first four-and-a-half games with Henry, Purdue threw for 855 yards and ran for 409. After that, the team passed for 1,735 yards and rushed for 396. Tom Campbell Dalyn Dawkins' decision to transfer shouldn't make too much of an immediate impact in the Boilermakers' running back corps with a pair of seniors at the top of the depth chart for 2014.
