Raheem Mostert had victo- ries in the 100 and 200 meters and also anchored Purdue's second-place 400 relay team. With that performance, Mo- stert picked up the Big Ten Track Athlete-of-the-Championships, his second this year after also win- ning the award during the indoor season. Mostert earned 20 of the team's 79 total points and contrib- uted to 13 more with the relay fin- ishes — he also helped the 1,600 relay finish fourth — moving the relay team up at least two spots in his final leg in the 400. Dani Bunch earned her 10th and 11th career Big Ten medals over the weekend af- ter picking up silvers in the hammer throw and the shot put. She was named Big Ten Field Athlete-of-the-Champi- onships for her effort. Nikki Nunn won the title in the long jump. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won the hammer throw and finished second in the shot put. Bunch and Mostert are among 25 athletes who will continue their seasons with the NCAA East Preliminary Round May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla. Bunch qualified in the hammer and shot put, while Mostert is in for the 100 and 200 indi- vidually, as well as the 400 and 1,600 relay teams. All are hoping to qualify for the NCAA Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore. Volleyball announces 2014 schedule Volleyball announced its 2014 slate, and will face off with 10 NCAA teams from 2013 as well as seven teams that wrapped last season in the AVCA Top 25. The non-conference slate is highlighted with a match with No. 9 San Diego in the Mortar Board Premier. USF and LSU round out the traditional opening weekend tour- nament. In the second and third weeks, Purdue will be at the Ken- neshaw State Invitational in Geor- gia and at a tournament at Western Kentucky, respectively. Host WKU finished 27-6 and finished first in the Sun Belt (regular season). Purdue wraps the non-con- ference season with its annual Ac- tive Ankle Challenge, where it will play host to Saint Louis, Morehead State and Notre Dame. Morehead State posted a 27-8 record and finished first in the East Division of the Ohio Valley Conference and won the league tourna- ment title, earning an NCAA berth. The Big Ten slate features home-and- away matches with Indiana, Maryland, Min- nesota, Michigan State, Northwestern, Rutgers and Wisconsin. The Boil- ermakers also will play six teams just once, visit- ing Iowa, Illinois and Ne- braska and playing host to Michi- gan, Ohio State and Penn State. The Boilers ended the 2013 season ranked eighth in the final AVCA Coaches Poll after their sec- ond Elite Eight run in the last four seasons and seventh Sweet 16 berth in the last nine seasons. Ten players return from the 2013 roster, while seven newcom- ers join the group. Quiroga wins prestigious award Cashé Quiroga has been named a 2014 recipient of the prestigious National Association of Academic Advisors for Athlet- ics (N4A) Wilma Rudolph Student- Athlete Achievement Award, hon- oring him for overcoming great personal, academic and/or emo- tional odds to achieve academic success while participating in in- tercollegiate athletics. Quiroga, who recently graduated with a bach- elor's degree in Organi- zational Leadership and Supervision, will be rec- ognized at the N4A Na- tional Convention June 7 in Orlando. Quiroga is the fourth Purdue student- athlete to receive the award, joining fellow wrestler Akif Eren (2011), Kevin Hough (1993, men's golf ) and John Reeves (1998, football) as re- cipients. The four-year letterwinner has experienced highs and lows. As an unseeded true freshman, Quiroga earned All-America hon- ors at 125 pounds, a feat only five other Boilermaker grapplers had ever accomplished. He qualified for a second NCAA appearance as a redshirt sophomore, but didn't get on the podium. In the summer of 2012, Quiro- ga developed a staph infection. He was slow to respond the next season and battled more injuries, limiting him to 13 matches. In his final season in 2013, Quiro- ga returned to the NCAA Wrestling Championships and reached the quarterfinals before losing. purdue beats iu in all- sports competition A strong showing by spring sports teams helped Purdue to win the Governor's Cup over Indi- ana. In the all-sports competition against the Hoosiers, the Boiler- makers prevailed 12-8, after plac- ing higher on both the men's and women's side of the Big Ten Out- door Track and Field Champion- ships. The men's and women's track and field squads also both earned points during the indoor season. The series was deadlocked at 6 after Purdue won the lone men's basketball meeting of the season 82-64. Indiana then took a one- point lead with a 5-2 victory in women's tennis. But then the Boilermakers scored six of the final seven points for their first title since 2006-07. Purdue's volleyball and wom- en's basketball teams both swept their games against the Hoosiers to earn points. The teams tied in 2007-08 and 2009-10.
