Gold and Black Illustrated at 25
As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at memorable covers
while reflecting what was going on at the time.
Over the years, there have some dramatic covers depicting Purdue wins against Michigan State. After
all, there have been some dramatic games between the schools. Yet, this cover of the Oct. 22, 1999 issue of linebacker
Jason Loerzel celebrating with the Boilermaker faithful after the Boilermakers' 52-28 win over fifth-ranked Michigan State
depicted the emotions of the fan base at the time. In '99, Purdue had a monster October schedule. And heading into the
game with Sparty, the Boilermakers had lost in consecutive weeks at Michigan and Ohio State. But the 24-point win erased,
at least for a week, doubts Purdue could compete with the nation's big boys. And the '99 October gauntlet did prepare
Purdue well for the following season when the Boilermakers won four straight games in October en route to their Big Ten
championship and Rose Bowl run.
In that 1999 game, senior receiver Chris Daniels set the Big Ten record with 21 receptions for 301 yards, and Drew Brees
completed 40-of-57 passes for 509 yards. MSU did intercept Brees four times, including two pick-sixes, making the large
victory margin all the more impressive.

"Wiping the haters
and doubters off after
my first sack this
season. Happy to wake
up with the victory"
Defensive end Ryan Russell (@RKRelentless), referring to a Twitpic
in which he's making a wiping gesture following his sack, after Pur-
due's win at Illinois on Saturday. It was actually sack No. 2 for Russell
this season.
