GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 7 • 31 NATIONAL NOMINATION After his impressive debut at quarterback, Austin Appleby was selected by the Manning Award as one of eight quarterbacks in the country named "Stars of the Week." The award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004. Fans had a chance to vote for Appleby during the week for the "best performance." He completed 15-of- 20 passes for 202 yards and a touch - down and ran for 76 yards and two TDs in a 38-27 victory over Illinois. The top vote-getter earned the Manning Award Q u a r t e r b a c k - o f - the-Week. THE NEXT THREE Oct. 18, at Minnesota Coming off a bye week, Minne- sota hosts Northwestern at TCF Bank Stadium. The Gophers hope to end Northwestern's consecutive winning streak at three. In last week's win, the Wildcats (3-2) gave up 284 rushing yards, which bodes well for Gopher running back David Cobb, who is fourth in the Big Ten with 722 yards on the ground. Tight end Maxx Williams leads Minnesota in receptions, receiv- ing yards and TDs despite playing through injuries this season. A victory puts Minnesota at 2-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 2004. Nov. 1, at Nebraska This week, the Cornhuskers have a bye week before they travel to Evan- ston to face surging Northwestern. Last week, Nebraska suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Michigan State 27-22 in East Lansing. Nebraska, however, almost pulled a miraculous fourth-quarter comeback after falling behind 27-3. The rally ended when the Spartan defense intercepted Tommy Armstrong with under a minute to play. Armstrong was able to put up 273 yards but only managed to complete 47 percent of his passes while throwing two inter- ceptions. It was also was an uncharacteristi- cally unproductive game for Heisman candidate Ameer Abdullah, who had a mere 45 yards on 24 carries. This fall at a computer or mobile device near you!
