"So when I'm out there, it doesn't matter if it's a running back, a tight end, a wide receiver, Usain Bolt, it's my job to cover them and if I don't, that's on me. If the coaches are asking me to do something, that's on me. Any sit- uation they put me out there in and they think I can handle, I'm going to handle it." Still, seeing a third linebacker on the field in those situations could leave offensive coordinators salivat- ing, thinking they have a mismatch by putting Herman in certain situa- tions. Freeman and his linebackers say that's not the case, though. Not with Herman's athleticism. "We always say he runs like a deer because he covers so much ground in very few steps," Bentley said. "That's something that benefits him, it al- lows him to take some of the false steps you may have going against a wide receiver because it's not nor- mal for a linebacker to be matched up against a wide receiver, but if he does get backed up a little bit, he's able to make up that ground again. "I've seen him play man-to-man on a wide receiver and be able to cov- er him. That's something that most teams can't say they have, and that's something that gives us a leg up. We don't have to take a linebacker off the field in order to play third-and-long. We can keep all three on the field and that can give us an edge, and that's an edge we need." j
