Mathias' big summer was fueled
largely, he says, by the confidence that
came not only from experience but
from being fully operational physical-
ly. Last summer, he was held back by a
bout with mono, followed by a pair of
sprained ankles once preseason prac-
tice began.
In the spring he underwent nasal
surgery to remedy the origins of his
past battles with illness.
This summer, he was totally healthy.
Stephens, meanwhile, suffered no
lasting effects from the finger injury
that bothered him last season or the
ankle injury that compounded matters.
"Dakota has been unstoppable in
terms of open gyms," forward Vince
Edwards said. "He's making step-back
threes. He's put a lot of work in. You
just have to come in and watch him for
yourself.
"But Kendall Stephens, he makes
some unbelievable shots, NBA plays,
NBA moves. He's been going right at
Rapheal (Davis). He's worked on his
defense and he's making strong moves
and has a little bit of finesse to his
game now."
Additionally, it will be interesting to
see whether there's a chain reaction of
position switches or role changes start-
ed by Swanigan's arrival.
"Last year (people) didn't think
we'd be very good and this year
they think we'll be pretty good.
Who cares? We're going to
work like we were picked to be
last again."
