8 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED D.J. Knox Boiler Index: Smoking A sophomore, D.J. Knox spent his training camp running circles around Purdue's defense. The running back might not have the speed of his predecessors — Akeem Hunt and Raheem Mostert — but he might be just as dangerous, if not more so. Knox has an uncanny ability to dart into a gap, then spin his way out of it, clearing away from defenders quickly. He might have a big year. Marcus Freeman Boiler Index: Steaming Three years ago, Purdue's linebackers were in shambles, with so few commodities that they didn't play well on Saturdays. But in a short span, position coach Marcus Freeman has molded the group into potentially the Boilermakers' best — and deepest — unit. And there's not a senior in the group. Annie Drews Boiler Index: Smoldering Annie Drews, Purdue's right outside hitter, is very good, an All-Big Ten preseason selection. But Coach Dave Shondell thinks the senior can be the very best in the con- ference. To be awarded as such at the end of the season, it might take not only a big year for her, but a big bounce back by the Boilermakers. —Kyle Charters Boiler Index 8 GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED Photos by Tom Campbell "(No.) 9 (Anthony Brown) and 24 (Frankie Williams), those guys are unbelievable. Those guys are incredible, incredible players. I didn't realize they are as good as they are." Darrell Hazell on Purdue's two senior cornerbacks during media day on Aug. 9 "I am excited because I think we're going to be better than the average volleyball fan thinks because they forget about teams who aren't in the NCAA Tournament." Coach Dave Shondell on his overlooked Boilermaker volleyball team "It'll make a statement when you cross Northwestern. Think Neil Armstrong Hall. It'll have something that will pop."
