Upwards of a half dozen times this fall, Swanigan spent the night in Purdue's locker room, caught between a late-night obligation and a crack-of-dawn workout. That's nothing all that out of the ordi- nary for college athletes. But consider that Swanigan literally lives right across the street from Mack- ey Arena, so close you could throw a basketball overhand from its front en- trance across Northwestern Avenue and bounce it off his apartment building. It's a professional approach in every sense. Some might see it as unreasonable; some might look at Swanigan and wonder whether he's enjoying himself, whether he's getting to be a kid. But this is just what he is. And he seems to love it, seems to have fully "embraced the process," as is one of his mantras. And he is not about to let go. The enjoyment lies in the results, al- ways has. "I like working," Swanigan said. "When it manifests on the court, it's just one of the best feelings." Years ago, Barnes gave Swanigan the "blueprint," as he says, and the player bought in wholly. He saw results, then became hooked on those results. It snowballed. "There's no secret to it, just straight hard work," Swanigan said during a 25-minute conversation between one of Purdue's finals-week practices and his own personal extra practice that fol- lowed. "It is just about doing it every day. There is no drink you can buy and take for 10 days and just automatically lose weight or become a better person. It's every day, when people are doing other things, when you want to do something else, you just have to do it." He does it, with a level of personal dis-
