IllustrateD volume 24, issue 5 71 f Each of them asked the usual questions, trying to figure out who else was going to play. Each of them found out later they had said the same thing: they would come if Kip could get Scheffler to come, too. Scheffler did come, and showed up looking like he had stepped out of the 80s. Short shorts, and all that. That's what you get when you buy clothes at a garage sale from the tall doctor down the street instead of springing for new ones. "We railed on him," Stephens says, laughing. "But he felt like a part of us. We railed on each other, too." Scheffler was equally unique over his seven seasons in the NBA. He believes his scoring average (1.9) is the lowest ever for anyone who played as long as he did. But he still founds ways to leave a mark, with teammates and fans. His best years came in Seattle with the SuperSonics, for whom he played five seasons before plantar fasciitis cut short his career. He was a fan favorite as the end-of-bench guy with the perfect attitude. Just like at Purdue he was a memorable teammate, too, the instigator of endless debates on bus rides. Sam Per- kins calls him one of the best teammates he ever had. Scheffler stayed in Seattle after his career ended and started a business with his wife, Kim. He maintained a relationship with the Sonics, leading youth clinics and making appearances. One night, when the Pacers were in town, he ran some young kids through drills on the court during halftime of a game. He ended by having them dive on the floor. He's since moved back to Grand Rapids with his wife and two children. Their business, KS Specialties, acts as a middle man between manufacturers, mostly food compa- nies, and Amazon.com. Life is good back home, except when people remind him of that 1990 game at Michigan State. The butt of so many jokes, he's had the last laugh. "He's a special guy," Keady says. "I'll never forget him. I wish we'd had more like him." j Montieth hosts "One on One with Mark Montieth" on 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis in addition to writing for Pacers.com. The radio show is available via podcast at 1070thefan.com.
