GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 25, EXPRESS 23 • 3 Gold and Black Illustrated at 25 As we celebrate our 25th year of publishing Gold and Black Illustrated, we look back at the memorable covers while reflecting on what was going on at the time. Purdue hopes history repeats itself in East Lansing on Wednesday night. It's senior night and that almost guarantees the Spartans will be jacked up for the last home appearance for Branden Dawson and Travis Trice. But back on March 1, 1998, the Boilermakers faced a similar task and left the Breslin Center with one of their more remarkable victories, a 99-96 overtime triumph. Prior to the game, the No. 11-ranked Boilermakers watched as the No. 10 Spartans hoisted their Big Ten title banner. The banner read "Big Ten Champi- ons," which was a little premature, only because after game was concluded the Spartans had to share the title with Illinois. Brad Miller (left, hugging Gary McQuay) saved his last regular-season game for one of his best, scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Coach Gene Keady used only seven players in the game and watched his team fight hard on the boards, outrebounding the hosts 42- 31 in what was the key stat in the game. MSU was the best rebounding team in the league that season. The Boilermakers had to rally from a 12-point second half deficit as well, as Brian Cardinal came up big (19 points) as did senior Alan Eldridge (15 points with three three-pointers). Both teams did well in the NCAA Tournament — Purdue advanced to the Sweet 16. A lot has happened in the past 17 years. Miller went on to enjoy a strong NBA career, while McQuay died after a battle with cancer in 2002. — Alan Karpick "Purdue has the best motion/ball movement of anyone I've seen lately... really fun to watch" ESPN analyst and radio host Dan Dakich (@dandakich) during the first half of Purdue's game at Ohio State Sunday night.
