All of the students wore the headbands and the cheerleaders were dressed in 80s attire as part of the special evening. Basil Smotherman (5) was all over court and beyond in the win over the Scarlet Knights, scoring a career best 17 points on just seven shot attemps and add- ing in three steals and three assists along the way. Smotherman's 17 helped Purdue score 92 points, its highest output in a Big Ten game since 2002 against Penn State. The Paint Crew showed its appreciation for A.J. Hammons becoming the 48th Boilermaker to score over 1,000 points. They had to be patient, though, as Hammons only needed to score three to surpass the barrier, but didn't do so until the 13:35 mark of the second half.
